Wouldn't they be surprised when one day I woke out of my black ugly dream, and my real hair, which was long and blond, would take the place of the kinky mass Momma wouldn't let me straighten? My light-blue eyes would hypnotize them ...
- I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
On TV and in magazines, you seldom see a dark-skinned black person. Our culture is still being led to believe that having lighter skin somehow makes you a better person.
Black people with lighter skin get treated better; I believe this discrepancy stems from the days of slavery. In general, dark-skinned blacks labored in the fields while light-skinned blacks worked indoors. Slave owners and even slaves gave lighter-skinned blacks more respect. This segregation of shades within the same race is a serious problem. So let's examine where it all started.
As we all know, the white man spread his seed among his African slave women with reckless abandon, producing pretty mulatto, quadroon (one-quarter black) and exotic octoroon (one-eighth black) children that would fetch a hefty price on the slave market. Female slaves were auctioned at "quadroon balls," where respectable white gentlemen could choose a tryst for the evening or a sex slave for life.
Lighter-skinned blacks, the ones that were closest in relation to the master, were favored and treated differently. These light-skinned blacks became free blacks, and were allowed to prosper and flourish. There is still some of that today.
Now before we go any further let me say this. Though the general trend is for a preference for light-skinned blacks those judgements may be made based on one's on skin tone. And although research has shown that lighter African Americans make more money and are perceived to be smarter there has been little to no research that I know of that shows the disadvantages of being light and the prejudices of darker blacks.
Whether it's the cover of magazines, the stars picked as the leads in a movie , or 50 Cent's new video, light-skinned people always get first dibs. My 15 year old nephew told me a few days ago that he prefers light-skinned girls becasue "there really aren't a lot of pretty dark-skinned girls." Sad isn't it? It is my belief that music videos especially have pushed this idea that "light is right and black get back!"

Several authors have stated that light-skinned women are perceived as attractive, intelligent, moral, sexually more desirable, even chaste; whereas dark-skinned are regarded as mean, evil, stupid, even as not trust-worthy. My sister would receive back handed compliments such as "She is pretty to be dark-skinned". Huh? Isn't that like saying "you're pretty although you have that arm growing out of your neck!"
The mass media, particularly television, contributes to this perception by portraying "whiteness or lightness" as a symbol of what is attractive, adorable, desirable, pure, loveable and competent. Lighter skin tone is thus portrayed as a standard for attractiveness and competence. Because physical attractiveness is perceived as associated with social and intellectual competence, integrity, potency, dominance, and even good mental health, it has more bearing on women than men. This explains why women constitute the overwhelming majority of those who practice skin lightening. It has also been reported that women are perceived as more feminine and attractive when they emulate the whiteness standard.
Even the cosmetic industry promotes products that are designed to help dark-skinned women look "lighter".
So you see I believe that as hard as I had it my sister and other dark-skinned women have it worse. To this day I have never seen her date a dark man. Because she like so many dark-skinned women feel like they have to have a light man to be validated as being pretty. With that being said she would NEVER admit it. On the other hand a lot of light-skinned women believe that they are pretty because they are light. Never made sense to me but ok if that's what floats your boat. They in turn try to use their so called good looks to get them ahead in life instead of using their brain! Haven't you heard a light skinned person say "I've been out in the sun too long, I'm getting black!" That always irks me. It's just so ignorant. People please think about the things that come out of your mouths!
In the entertainment industry it is very obvious who are the ones that receive the fringe benefits. Here are a few examples. In 2001 India.Arie and Alicia Keys both put out very good albums. Though both sisters received multiple Grammy nominations only Alicia won. In fact she took home 5 awards including Best Album of the Year. I am a fan of both of Alicia and India and I couldn't say that there was that big of a difference in there albums. Is the fact that India didn't win any and Alicia won so many and has went on to have a much more lucrative career a coincedence? I think not. What about the lovely Halle Berry? She won an Oscar for a role that, in my opinion, was so-so at best. Even if you feel she did a great job was she better than Whoopi in The Color Purple? Please. I was watching Antwone Fisher recently and I noticed how the casting for that movie was tilted. Both the actresses chosen to be Denzel and Derek Luke's leading ladies were of very light complexion and were portrayed in a very positive light. There's nothing wrong with that within itself but when Antwone's mother, who was not depicted with any great sympathy by the film's conclusion, was played by a very dark-skinned woman. So light women are the ideal mate? Dark women are nasty and not to be trusted? Of course not but that is what these images suggest. I think we have to be very careful not to focus so much on Vanessa Williams and Beyonce and forget the Tracy Chapman and Alex Wek are just as beautiful and just as talented!
This division exists in our communities, schools and even families. It's ridiculous that we as black people do the very thing to each other that was done to us. Instead of dividing, we need to unite to address more important issues in the black community, like homelessness, drugs, violence, HIV/AIDS and poverty. We need to build stronger communities and help instead of judge each other. We all deal with some sort of racism daily - whether it's racial profiling or an old lady clutching her bag tighter in an elevator. We shouldn't discriminate against each other. More attention needs to be paid to a person's character rather than the shade of his or her skin.
The only way for change is making your voice heard. You are the consumer who buys albums and purchases magazines. If you don't like what you see, speak out, write letters, send emails. Make your voice heard and realize that no matter what color you are and no matter what shade of color you are we are all beautiful!
56 comments:
Yes, Yes, Yes, Ddot! You are speaking it! We are all beautiful. We are all plucked from the same vine. We are all members of the Navel Tribe.
Thank you for your words!
Love it! I was waiting for this, King. I'm so glad you raised the Alicia Keys/India Arie issue. My sister and I were discussing that the other day. Alicia is more marketable because she's light and that's considered beautiful.
The light/dark thing is just more ignorance that keeps getting passed from generation to generation. I remember how, when I was little, people were amazed that my baby sister and I had such long hair because we were dark. I remember how girls used to go crazy over the really light skinned brothers just because they were light (cuz some of 'em were NOT cute...sorry). Now, me personally, I've always loved the dark skinned brothers. I mean really, Morris Chestnut or Shamar Moore???......MORRIS CHESTNUT ALL DAY!!! LOL!
You're right! It's up to us to change society's perception of what's beautiful. Speak on, oh royal chocolate one!!!
well said King!! Every word of that was rightly said and very inspiring. I did my second year thesis (dissertation) on Maya Angelou and the power of the black Female in her poems, she's an excellent writer and a great woman. God made us all, this world would be boring if we were all one colour wouldn't it?
Shades of white, yellow, black and brown only make this world a prettier place to live in :)
I'm brown and proud of it :)
George thanks and yes we are all members of the Navel Tribe!. I like that!
I agree with you. (and I white, for the record, and we know this)
brownsoul isn't the India/Alicia thing completely obvious?!
I've heard a lot of women don't like Shemar Moore for more than one reason! And while I'm on that dude who thought that those cornrows he wore in Diary of a Mad Black Woman looked completely ridiculous?!
Thanks for stopping by brownsoul!
Asi I think Maya Angelou is awesome! Thanks for stopping by my friend!
Danielle YOU ARE NOT WHITE!!! LOL!!
Ok Still I don't know what comments that you don't like but I do understand that some light people may feel like I tilted to the side of the darked brothers and sisters so that's understandable. The story that was posted yesterday afternoon was not the original and so it has now been updated with some additions. I do understand that there are prejudices from the dark side as well. Still and all of you guys let me know if I balance it out a little better.
I thought the pic of Tyrese would pull you in!
I think it flip flops, during the era of black pride dark skinned brothers became the style. I personally like a man for what he is on the inside....as far as my physical attractions go, I love a man with height (because I'm tall) and who's thick (because...well you know lol). I take the Jay Z approach, "I like boys boys boys boys...boys I do adore..." All shades of black is beautiful to me...pretty dark skin...pretty light skin...pretty brown eyes...I love it. I must admit though, I am prejudice to the point that I won't date outside of my race.
Good post...
Thanks Nia. It seems like you like'em all!!
I agree that we all have our prejudices Still and that's the point of this post. We have to stop discriminating no matter what your color.
Wrongfullaccused good points! Hmmm.. I am convinced that I know you! Am I right in my assumption?
hmmm...really? Like what *Spexial*?? Please share! LOL!
Jacquelyn I definitely think that it's something that we SHOULDN"T have to talk about but it's still there. I think that a lot of Light brothers and sisters feel like it's an old topic and why can't we just move on. I also think that a lot of white people feel the exact same way about blacks bringing up racism.
As far as your comment "has it ever occurred to folks that the masses prefer music to be "easy" to listen to & not require too much thought about what the artist is saying?"
You can't be serious. No really. YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS!
Thanks for stopping by....
KING, oh yea, thanks for reminding me. I'm a sista!
Jacquelyn I want to agree with you on that but it just doesn't hold water. I think every woman could relate to "Video" just as easily as "Fallin" and what about "Ready for Love"? And none of this is to take away from Alicia! But doesn't it seem odd that India didn't win ANYTHING?! I agree that some of the voters might be out of tune with urban music but Outkast...yes OUTKAST has won Album of the Year!
I know that everything isn't a conspiracy but I think sometimes decisions are made based on marketing like my good friend Brownsoul mentioned.
You are too funny Danielle! I'm trying to come up with a weapon so I can be in the D-D-D-D UNIT!!! :)
I like the added pics.
"This division exists in our communities, schools and even families."
Yes. I've heard the names you mentioned used among my friends as well as family members, and the discrimination goes both ways.
"It's ridiculous that we as black people do the very thing to each other that was done to us."
So very true about many of the issues that plague our community. I believe that black folks will not truly overcome until we stop stepping on each other trying to get to the top.
So my dear Jacquelyn why didn't they televise india winning her awards? Alicia's face was all over the TV! Again I'm not saying that all of it if any is intentional. But it makes me think and those that live in those light-skinned worlds might need to stop getting on the offensive so quickly. it's a problem for us all.
As you can tell Jackie....can i call you Jackie?...I'm bored out of mind at work too! LOL
Ginette who's Derrick? LOL! Anyway I thought you'd have a lot to say on the topic. Thanks for showing love!
BrownSoul Preach it sister!!! Why haven't I linked you yet?!!! :)
But didn't Beyonce perform that year? And I've been trying to decide whether Beyonce would be considered light or is she more of a brown. I'm not sure yet. But I'll be sure to let you guys know what I come up with! Feel free to share your thoughts!
Nope you're not alone Jackie. I blog for 7 of the 8 hours I'm here! I mean I do have to eat lunch right!
Singlegirl I was out in Denver for business about a year ago and it seemed to me that the brothas out there skip the whole light thing and go straight to white! Not that there's anything wrong with that. But anyway I feel your pain. But if you're as cute as you seem to feel you are I'm sure some dude will scoop you up sooner or later!
Excellent discussion.
Thanks GP. From the looks of your pic I thought you'd have something more to say though.
Very timely and interesting post! I voted and yes I thought Shemar's cornrows were ridiculous.
www.princessdominique.com/blog
Thanks Princess Domonique. it's always nice to have fellow royalty in MY KINGDOM. Thank you so much for agreeing that Shemar's head looked ridiculous in that movie! With all those black people around it just seems like someone would've said "hey dude's hair just don't look right! Can we get a better wig or somn?!" Don't get me wrong. I'm sure it was said unfortunately the right people didn't get the message!
Not that i would ever admit watching Diary of a Mad Black Woman but since we are on the subject of Shemar and the light and dark thing let's look at the casting for this movie. Bad Guy: Dark skinned Husband....Bimbo or the more desired woman: Light skinned chick....Good Guy: Jacked up cornrow head...and light skinned..Shemar!
C'mon yall gotta feel me on this!
In my opinion skin complexion was definitely not a factor between Alicia & India. That is just plain outlandish! If color was the case Seal would have not won any Grammy's. African American are the only ones truly keeping up this light & dark skin drama. For example, you even try to say that many of us "light skin folks" use our color to get jobs and are incompetent. Well, guess what. It is people like you that actually keep up the drama by insinuating ideas like that. Matter of fact look at your web poll question. You could have said "do you have a color preference: yes or no". However you choose to break down colors and all that. I like all colors, that is why I did not even vote. I have to much to say about this topic that is why I will just keep my mouth shut. By the way my graduation cap and gown pic is up on my blog.
Wow Gp I didn't know you had it in you! Why are all the light people getting so offended?
First of all I never said that all light people were incompetent! That's ridiculous. But I do believe that a lot of lighter-skinned people especially girls believe that they are pretty simply BECAUSE they are light and no other reason and some of them try to use that to get them ahead in life. NOT ALL BUT SOME!
As for the poll question yeah you're right I could've did it the way you mentioned but this is MY KNIGDOM!
New pics are up over at your spot huh?! Ok cool I'll definitely be checking them out...with your lite brite self!!! LOL!
You know Ddot, I have so much to say but I am going to let it go. But do not think that your last comment is unanswered because you points are valid. And by the way, I did not say you said "all" light-skinned people are incompetent. Oh, and there is a lot of dark skin sisters that think they all that just cuz they dark skin. Hence "the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice". What is all that?...lol
Ahhh I was waiting on that one! Well I've been thinking about that old saying "The Blacker the Berry, the Sweeter the Juice." This is what I've come up with. IT'S TRUUUUEEEEE IT'S SOOOOOO TRUUUUUEEE!!!!!!!
Ahhhhhh! Very good point about Diary of Mad Black Woman!!!!
Even though I do like this movie...yes, I'm sorry, I'm a Madea fan, the light/dark issue in the movie did come to my attention.
It's like you said, everything isn't a conspiracy. There are always exceptions. Yes, there are dark-skinned folks doing just fine in the industry. And yes, Halle Berry did get the role of the crack head in Jungle Fever--not a dark-skinned sista--back in the day before she won the Oscar. As a matter of fact Jungle Fever raised some intersting points on the light/dark issue within the black community.
Anyway, the point is that the issue is STILL REAL...even though there have been some strides to change it.
Jackie yes a lot of light people think that because they are light they are cute! I'm sure it comes from being told that they are cute there whole life. So it's something that is definitley passed down. Again that is the reason I wrote this particular blog.
It's not that I think all light people are that way. Heck some of my best friends are light....HAHAHAHA....I crack myself up! Sorry. Anyway I don't mean to do to light people what I don't like done to me. I will judge each person as an individual but if I ever hear one of you say something about the sun and you "getting black". I'm dropping you right where you stand!
Hey I had forgotten all about halle playing the crack head in Jungle Fever! And she was on something in Losing Isaiah too right? BrownSoul coming through again!
And let me add that I know that some dark people don't like light people simply BECAUSE they are light. It goes both ways.
And yes Brown the issue is still there and as we can see it still ruffles feathers. This has been the most comments I've gotten on a blog yet!
hmmm - there are some good points here, but there are some things i dont agree with. it is a myth that light-skinned people were treated so much better in the antebellum period .. especially if their parent was a white woman -- there is stigma to being dark-skinned, but i think it also depends on preception ... Ludacrious is high-yellow, but he is much more threatening than Wayne Brady .. when it comes to Alicia and India ... im not a fan of either, but India is not incedibly talented herself. The original black darling of Clive Davis was Whitney who is far from light-skinned and Faith Evans is as pale as it gets, but she will never be on the cover of Vogue. what about Seal??? Who is not embraced by the black community-- but white folks love him. I agree w/ a lot of what your saying -- but i dont think being light-skinned is as much of a privelege as one thinks it is ... i would never say how it is to be dark-skinned because i'm not so im confused when people have others figured out. when you get a chance go to my block and read my post Tragic Mulatto, which talks about many of the things you mentioned. http://claycane.blogspot.com/2005/08/tragic-mulatto.html peace -- sorry for all the spelling errors!
Good comment Cane. I am going to check that post out.
Excellent points Cane. I'll be sure to read that. Now let me see if I understand you. You're saying that me being a dark man can't understand what it's like to be a light man. Makes sense. But to compare a rapper (Ludacris) with a comedian (Wayne Brady) doesn't make much sense. The Alicia and India comparison was made because they are in the same profession and do the same type music. Then to say India isn't talented, well now you've lost some credibility. let's move on.
Whitney Houston is definitely not light skinned but she ain't Florida Evans either! As far as Faith goes for the majority of her career she has been overweight so no she won't be on the cover of a magazine. But that's a whole other blog!
Now SEAL is the exception. His whole situation is an enigma because he is black. Blue black. And he's married to one of the world's best known White Super Models. I gotta think about that one.
Great Post. It's good to have some brothers join in the fun!
Mocha sista on deck... Ok, why is it so hard to acknowledge that black people feel the "black is wack." Knock it off! I just heard a radio personality in NY say this week that he would only go down on a light-skinned chick. I don't know why I was surprised, but I was shocked. I immediately wrote an email. Anyway, I hear it all the time.."you are cute to be dark." As if it’s some freak of nature to be both at the same time. We were all picked on in school, but there is an overall negative tone about being dark that goes far beyond the cruelty of children. Dark-skin women are tired of being treated like we are inferior to people who have the complexion of a brown bag or lighter. It’s an issue and we all need to be honest about how we individually enable such self-hatred.
Quit with the cleches..”we are all human and we..blah blah blah.” You would be the 1st one to say “oh Halle, Beyonce and J-Lo are beautiful”….forgetting Tweet, Niaomi Campbell, Cheryl Lee Ralph, Jill Marie Jones, Foxy Brown or Kelly Knowland. Notice I don't have many names, because the industry is saturated with the ladies of the light skin persuasion.
Our ideas of beauty are not associated with Africa, but with Europe. Let's keep it real.
I appreciate your kind words on my blog. Thank you.
So, naturally I had to come by and check you out, it's the way blog networking goes. :)
Hmmmmmm, I picked a good day to visit. First off, I'm just not black. I've never considered anyone more or less attractive or talented by the depth of the color of their skin. I like India and Alicia, but neither as much as I like Seal. I've got to be honest, I've just never thought the shade had anything to do with the beauty of a person. Don't go off on me for not understanding from your view point, because, let's just face it...I'll never be able to. I can only tell you how I see people...and the way I've raised my kids to see the beauty of an individual. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with color.
Hope, after all the above, you don't mind me stopping by. I do appreciate the topic, the open discussion and the way you write.
baby, i love a dark chocolate man. i feel sorry for sistas who can't see the beauty in smooth, soft black-brown skin...
and i know what you mean about the ladies, too. India.Arie has so much talent, and because she refuses to perm her hair, or wear flashy clothes, or be 'mainstream' she doesn't get the play that Alicia does. not that Alicia isn't talented, but...
but for real, caramel is good and all, but be honest, most of us would prefer chocolate.
hmmm well, i didnt say India Arie had no talent i said she is not incredibly talented ... just because someone comes along that has a natural and is using black positivity as a marketing ploy doesnt mean they are a genius. dark skinned black woman musicians that are brilliant and completely shunned by the black community are Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman, Meshell Ndeheocello, Tamar Kali, Dionne Ferris ... they are brilliant, but they have a white following. i think music is a challening comparison cuz i can go on forever about dark-skinned artists who are amazing but because they are not doing trite r&b they are rejected by the black community. India is overrated and alicia keys is extremely overrated. However, i do not think neither one of them are talentless. to get more of my thoughts on India you can also check out this post: http://claycane.blogspot.com/2005/09/when-bad-music-happens-to-good-artists.html India is # four on the list and be sure to read some of the comments.
iight so you dont think luda and wayne brady are a good comparison (i think it works) ... someone said Shemar Moore and Morris Chestnut (shemar is not that famous i dont know anyone who would say Moore looks better than Chestnut) -- how about this .. Denzel Washington/Samuel Jackson/Eddie Murphy/Jamie Fox .... if your theory is true than the Rock (the wrestling guy) and Shemar Moore wouldve already won an Oscar and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I know everyone is thinking about HALLE BERRY ... DEF Halle fits that stereotype, but let me remind you of Whoopi Goldberg who is ALSO shunned by the black community. I do think it is harder for dark-skinned women in the Hollywood - i have a close friend who is an actor and he always says isnt harder for dark-skinned men than light skinned man (he's dark-skinned) ... but it damn sure is hard for dark-skinned women and women of any shade who have "ethnic features."
Once again - this is NOT to say there isnt a stigma to being dark-skinned -- lawd knows that there is .. but i just want to point out that ive been light-skinned all my life and i was called a nigger so much i thought it was my name. i knew people who were dark-skinned in my high school and neighborhood who were consider more attractive because of their HAIR TEXTURE and FEATURES (ive been told many times my features are too ethnic). we as the black community need to know that we are all BLACK FOLK (w/ the exception of Tiger Woods and Mariah Carey) and the RACIST RULING CLASS wants black folks to live by these IMAGINARY LINES OF COLOR CODES to divide us -- when at the end of the day we are all just "niggers" -- New Orleans prved that! it is a complex issue and i just wanted to show the other side. i think it is good that we have this dialogue!
Honestly, I really can't say there are few darkskinned people in the media. From basketball stars to tv sitcoms, you can find dark faces everywhere you look. However, lightskinned people DO get more press.
What I hate even more than the media pushing "bright, light and almost white" down our throats is BLACK people buying into the hype. We string three words together and every time I hear it, it makes me violent.lol
You know what those words are: "blackandugly". Saying them as if they go together, like pnut butter & jelly. UGH.
From triple-mocha to butterscotch I love ALL my peoples and ALL of our flavors are delicious.
Wow I honestly never expected this many comments. Don't get me wrong I like it and yall kept me busy all day yesterday! Keep coming back and I will try to keep my blog interesting.
I can honestly say that I learned something yesterday and learning is always a good thing. I'll get into that in a minute but let me address all the comments that were left after I logged off yesterday afternoon.
MizPowderPink- I totally agree with everything you said in your first paragraph! I'm not sure if you meant THE KING when you said "You would be the 1st one to say “oh Halle, Beyonce and J-Lo are beautiful”….forgetting Tweet, Niaomi Campbell, Cheryl Lee Ralph, Jill Marie Jones, Foxy Brown or Kelly Knowland." But you are somewhat right. I'm a walking contradiction like a lot of others I would assume. I love light women. Most wome that I have dated have been light. I can't explain it but it's the truth. But it's probably because of what you said in your last paragraph. I, like everyone else have been trained by books, and magazines and everything else to believe that white/light is beautiful. With that being said I do now recognize that I see the beauty in my dark sisters and because of not recognizing that earlier in my life I'm sure I missed out on some wonderful people. Thank MPP
Kathi- thanks for your comments and of course you are always welcome here!
Mai- I like the way you think!!!
Cane- All great comments especially the point about a lot of blacks not being very open to artist like Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman, Meshell Ndeheocello, Tamar Kali, Dionne Ferris. And yes I'm sure that it's easier for dark men than women in the acting field. Two words for you. Wesley Snipes. Thanks for stopping by brotha. I'll be checking you out today!
DF- VERY WELL SAID!!!
LadyinSatin- Ditto
Chele- I know I'm delicious! Who doesn't love CHOCOLATE! Thanks for stopping by!
DIVA- WOW. A nerve wasn't touched was it?! Great comments...now go get some sleep!
Yes my friends I have learned that sometimes it was my own insecurities that made me dislike a lighter skinned person. Every light skinned person doesn't think they are the ISH and a lot of them have had it just as hard because they are light. It has been tough for us all. I am glad we were able to have this discussion and air some things out. I hope some of you have learned something as well!
Check back with me at some point today for what my new topic will be. We'll try to have more fun since it's FRIDAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!
I'm digging it *spexial*.....
i love this post.
Hi I have never posted before but wanted to give my two cents. As a person who is multicultural not half anything but crazy I guess I would be considered a quadroon. Mom was Basque and Native american, dad Creole, Native American and Black. (I know creole is supposed to be Black and French)but I look oriental... Bear with me. When I go places with my spouse who is dark and chocolate... (as have all of my male companions) Darker women look at me like I am a leper. Rolling of the eyes clicking of the tongue etc. Sometimes I want to scream!! I AM BLACK!!! but that would be stupid. (My 3 children are all different shades all beautiful and all darker than I) I have always been told that I am so militant and stand up for Black rights because I feel like I have something to prove. There has always been a light dark issue- even in the Bible. In the Song of Solomon there is a scripture that describes his lover- "I am dark yet comely" The thing that bothers me about that is that the whole BUT. Why is it that Dark men are so highly prized but Dark women are treated like crap. My family is like the united nations we are all shades, shapes, mental status...(lol)I am an artist- I did a collage for the State fair in New Mexico for the African American Pavillion's opening celebration. It was a compilation of all different Black people holding up a torch. There was a baby on the bottom. The committee had the nerve to call me and say that the child was too light to represent the African American population. I was horrified and disgusted. I asked them if they knew that the child was the grandchild of Bob Foster- light heavyweight champ of the world, and his other Grampa was the Pastor of the Largest Black Church in the state. They said It matters not, we want you to replace him with a darker child.
I said - well, If MY SON IS TOO LIGHT TO REPRESENT BLACKS IN THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO USA< then maybe I am too Light to be the artist for you. I got an official apology. But It is all a bunch of garbage. FYI, I have always envied darker women because I felt that they were not only Beautiful, but that they were recognized as a PART of the oldest race in the world. Now I simply accept that we are all different and to hell with anyone who won't accept me for me.
You have a nice blog, I like the interaction that you have with your readers.
End of soapbox.
Thanks Frank! I hope you'll come back!
Ms Peculiar this is one of the best posts that I've read. Thanks so much for sharing. We all still have a ways to go!
and did you notice in a movie that was such a great step forward, Rosewood, take two giant stpes back by making him fall in love with the almost white looking Scrappie, while very dark Don Cheadles wife barely looked black at all. There was some line in the film about them being indian or some such crap, but it's all fruit from the same tree...it was said some months ago that there was an excuse about why they dont put darkskinned couples in movies, that no one wants to see it....well i do...anyone else?
Rascism is alive and well, and out dark skinned brothers and sisters still suffer after all these years. I wont even go into all the oreo, mutt jokes I had to deal with I suppose we all had our personal hells.
Can I have your permission to reprint this in my online magazine? Let me know darlingnickee at aol dot com
After reading all the commenns, I had to comment some mo, i dont want a pity pary either, and cant even go into all the crap I went thru as a kid....but I had to make this point; when I went to high school there was group called The Berries....(the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice) and they RAN my high school, and did a lot to cause tension and division in the school, im sure it was meant to invoke pride in the darker students, but damn, they made the light skinned kids feel like we werent worth a damn.
As far as being attracted to the opposite of what you are, everyone knows that this is true all around the board, most dark skinned people like light skinned people and vice versa...I have seen it more often than not in relationships. Is it because we come to hate what we are, or find it distateful due to the racial predjudice that we've been thru in our childhoods? Good question.
On a final note, why did I witness my light skinned/caramel skinned child (there are pics of her on my blog) get constantly dissed and picked on from the playgound to the schoolyard? Everything from "she has a weave".(?)...(and that was from a 7 year old) to "she thinks she's cute cause she's light skinned", (that was from a 9 year old) what do they know about these things at this age? Most likely it's something that came from their parents....and this happened over and over and over again, from the park, to chuck e cheese, to the beach....and whats the one thing that all of these incidences had in common? All of the girls who did it were very dark girls. It breaks my heart, because that tells me that the circle is not unbroken, and will be perpetuated onto our children and our childrens childrens children.
Not to even get on the fact that my boyfriend is your complexion...we're from Jersey, recently moved to GA and the stares...the nasty looks...it's incredible, and what makes it worse, is if you looked past my skin, and studied my face, my wide nose (my ass, lol) my hair, which is long, but kinked....you could easily see I'm not white, but most people dont get past the skin.
and now my daughter has made new friends, and why are most of them white? I dont know...has she been programmed by her experiences? I dont know.
I dont have any answers, i prefer to put my focus on other things. I've dealt with this whole light skinned/dark skinned thing my whole life and I'm so tired of it.
it boils down to one thing, self hatred, africans hate african americans, african americans hate hatiens (sp?), hatiens hate dominicans, dominicans hate puerto ricans, puerto ricans hate cubans, cubans hate mexicans, mexicans hate blacks....we all hate each other and its a damn shame cause we are all from the same continent.
ddot: Is Denzel Washington considered dark- or light-skinned? He is one of the handsomest leading men over the last ten years. Or Sean Patrick Thomas? I think there is a double standard, perhaps. Lighter-skinned women may have certain advantages, but I am not sure the same can be said about men.
Also, consider this - for white women, the tanner, the better. Seems like women need to get to some "light" skin, whether they need to darken (as white women) or lighten (as for African-American women).
The one abberation is Michael Jackson - he lightened his skin intentionally, and he went from being handsome to being freakish.
Chase these are two great posts!
Leesa, Denzel is considered Brown but Sean Patrick Thomas is definitely dark and yes darker black women have it harder than dark black men. Don't women always have it harder no matter what the category?
I never thought about it in terms of white people but yes tan white people are perceived to be more beautiful! I know I like my white women tan! Oops disregard that statement people might start thinking I like white people! LOL! Wow. That's crazy I need to ponder on that one.
Michael Jackson is....I ain't touching that one.
